Researchers Develop Revolutionary Cathode Material for Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Oil Price | April 19, 2024

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries hold promise for bringing more energy dense and low-cost batteries closer to market. University of California San Diego engineers have developed an advanced cathode material for lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries that is healable and highly conductive, overcoming longstanding challenges of traditional sulfur cathodes. These improvements overcome the limitations of lithium-sulfur batteries' current cathodes. Full Story

Solving the Roadblocks to Energy Transition

San Diego Business Journal | April 15, 2024

The energy transition, from fossil fuels-based energy sources of power to one based on a combination of renewable sources and electricity storage, is well underway. Signs of the transition, like the all-electric Tesla Model Y becoming the world's best-selling car last year, abound. To swiften the energy transition, San Diego companies and researchers are developing the crucial technology of high-power, high-capacity batteries needed to solve some of energy storage's most vexing roadblocks. Structurally Healable, Highly Conductive New Cathode for Solid-State Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Tech Briefs | March 28, 2024

A team led by engineers at the University of California San Diego has developed a new cathode material for solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries that is electrically conductive and structurally healable -- features that overcome the limitations of these batteries' current cathodes. Full Story

Scientists develop new material that could allow rechargeable batteries to 'self-heal'

The Cool Down | March 28, 2024

A battery cathode in development in labs at the University of California San Diego has Wolverine-like self-healing properties. Better yet, the regenerative ability of the lithium-sulfur electrode could help to unlock chemistry that doubles electric vehicle range, according to the experts. It's a promising breakthrough with fascinating potential. Full Story

Battery Breakthrough

San Diego Business Journal | March 19, 2024

A team of researchers at UC San Diego may have unlocked the potential of solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries -- considered to be a lower cost alternative to the lithium-ion batteries currently used in EVs, and one that also offers increased energy density. The UCSD team developed a new cathode material, a crystal composed of sulfur and iodine, for the batteries that both conducts electricity and is "structurally healable" -- meaning it can withstand both charging and discharging electricity and possibly double the range of EVs without adding more weight to a vehicle.
